The Language Explorer is a fun story-retelling app that aims tohelpresearchers learn about children’s language andcommunicationabilities. The app is part of a larger researchproject, sponsoredby the NIHR, which is trying to answer thequestion about whetheran app can help speech and languagetherapists evaluate thelanguage of children who may have adevelopmental language disorder(DLD). It aims to achieve this bycollecting data on how childrenbetween the ages of 4 and 8 performon its three tasks: StoryRetell, Comprehension and Repetition. Thiswill be used in thefuture to train an app to spot the commoncharacteristics of achild living with a DLD possesses. Will youhelp us harness thepower of technology to improve outcomes forchildren across thecountry? 2 out of 30 children have DLD so it isimportant thatspeech and language therapists (SLTs) have thenecessary tools toquickly and reliably do their assessments. TheLanguage Explorerproject seeks to achieve this by digitalisingexisting practicesused by SLTs, and by using new technologies toimprove the processof identifying DLD. DLD is a condition wherechildren have problemsunderstanding and/or using spoken language.There is no obviousreason for these difficulties; for example,there is no hearingproblem or physical disability that explainsthem. A combination ofthe fact that DLD has no known cause andsymptoms which often aredifficult to identify has led to manymisconceptions surroundingthe disorder. Children with DLD often gounrecognised and withoutappropriate support can go on to havesignificant difficulties witheducation and social relationships.This, in turn, has long termconsequences, with DLD being associatedwith future unemployment,mental and behavioural issues, and pooreconomic outcomes. However,access to specialist support andinterventions at the right timecan make a big difference, andreduce the chances of these negativeconsequences. This fact hasspurred on the Language Explorer team,to provide clinicians withthe tools to help identify DLD as earlyin a child’s development aspossible! The Language Explorer’s storyis about a boy and his dog’squest for treasure, which hasuniversal appeal for all! It has beendesigned with children toensure it is engaging, and to make surethe language used issuitable for its audience. After creating aprofile, the child willlisten to this story and then be asked toretell the story in thechild’s own words, before completing a quizand playing a repeatinggame. When you finish each challenge, youwill earn yourself apirate-themed reward: from a captain’s compassto a Pirate’s hat.When you win them all, you will be finally be aPirate Captain!After all of the tasks are completed, you can listenback to theirstory and play a game where you steer your ship tocollect as manytreasure coins as possible.
